🎸 023 Deep Rock Ballad Guitar Backing Track in Am
Orange Fin Tracks | Improvisation | Hyun Soo Lee (Orange Fin)
Hello, this is Hyun Soo Lee, also known as Orange Fin.
After a long stretch of scorching weather, the recent monsoon rains have finally brought some relief. In this quiet shift of the season, this track came to mind once again.
Originally introduced briefly on my Naver blog on September 17, 2022, I now revisit it with a fresh perspective in 2025 — and I'm excited to share it anew with all of you.
🎼 Structure Overview – A wave of emotion from calm to intensity
The track consists of two main sections — Part A and Part B — both built on the same four-chord progression:
Am - C - G - D
However, despite the shared progression, the emotional flow and density of the sound contrast dramatically between the two parts.
🔹 Part A – A calm beginning that approaches like a whisper
Delicate and restrained soundscape
A space where the guitarist can gently infuse emotion into the silence between rhythms
Each chord unfolds slowly with emotional resonance
Recommended approach: slow, minimal melodies with focused tone control
This section feels like the stillness after a rainfall — opening the listener's senses with subtle depth.
🔸 Part B – A powerful surge of emotion
Increased density in drums and bass, intensifying the rhythm
The overall sound expands, calling for stronger emotional expression
Though the chords remain unchanged, the manner of expression evolves — dynamic expansion is key
Recommended approach: bending, slides, fast picking, building repeating themes, use of delay and drive tone
This section becomes a space to cry out from within — a free form to let emotions erupt.
🎵 Chord Progression: Am - C - G - D
Though structurally simple and repeated, this four-chord loop carries a wide emotional range:
Am: The starting point of darker emotions; a quiet confession
C: Slight comfort and a gentle emotional rise
G: A sense of openness, reaching outward
D: A dissonant resolution, leading into the next phrase
The D chord, slightly outside the traditional A minor framework, leaves a sense of unresolved emotion — offering a perfect setup for further exploration in improvisation.
🎸 Playing Guide – How to express the emotional contrast
The essence of this track isn't about technical perfection, but about how one navigates the emotional contrast between the sections.
🧘 Beginners
Part A: One note per beat, expressed with slow rhythm and feeling
Part B: Repeat similar phrases with slightly more speed and intensity to create contrast
🎯 Intermediate and Above
Part A: Clean tone with reverb and compression to create a delicate and spacious sound
Part B: Driven tone with long delay to expand the space, applying bending, harmonics, and rhythmic variations
Suggested scales: A minor pentatonic and A natural minor scale (Aeolian mode).
A Minor Pentatonic: A C D E G — Safe across all chords; strong for riffs and phrasing.
A Natural Minor: A B C D E F G — Expands melodic range; expressive for emotional playing.
A Dorian: A B C D E F# G — Can be used briefly over the D major chord (chromatic shift from F to F#).
🎛 Tone Design & Mixing Intention
Drums: Light and tense in Part A; stronger kick and snare in Part B for added punch
Bass: Sustaining and atmospheric in Part A; tighter and more rhythmic in Part B
🎚 Recommended Guitar Tone Settings
Part A: Clean tone with single coils, tone knob slightly rolled off for warmth, light reverb
Part B: Use a strong Fuzz or distortion with emphasized mids, increased lead volume, and long delay
📝 Production Notes & Personal Reflection
When I first created this track, there was no elaborate story behind it.
I simply wanted to write something that starts quietly and draws you in deeper over time.
Listening again now, I realize that feeling was simple — yet crystal clear.
And I believe that this understated emotional flow still has the power to quietly accompany someone’s day.
💬 In Closing – A piece completed by your hands
“023 Deep Rock Ballad in Am” is not a finished piece.
It is reborn the moment you start playing it.
Whisper your emotions through Part A.
Let them burst open in Part B.
This music is ready to receive every expression you offer.
🎸 Thank you.
